Richmond native Mariah Seals expected to shine again in WAC conference

Richmond native Mariah Seals was named to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Women’s Basketball Preseason All-Conference first team, it was announced Wednesday.

The 5-3 guard at Utah Valley University became the second player in her basketball program’s history to be a first-team pick by all eight coaches in the WAC and the media.

Last year, Seals, an alum from Miramonte High School, made the second team All-WAC and ranked among the top 10 in the conference for points per game (9th, 11 ppg) and assists per game (7th, 2.8). She was ranked 13th in steals per game (1.3) and led her team with 40 steals last year.

In her first college year, she was named the WAC Freshman of the Year.

She is one of two remaining starters on a team that made it to the WAC Tourney semifinals.

Utah Valley was picked to finish as high as fifth in the WAC standings this year, with Seals being one of two remaining starters from a team that made it to the WAC tournament semifinals last year.

New Mexico State was picked as the favorite to win the WAC.

Utah Valley begins the season with an exhibition versus Southern Virginia University on Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. inside the P.E. Gym. The regular season starts with a home game against cross-town rival BYU on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
