The Baltic in Point Richmond is set to reopen as “Brezo at Baltic Square,” a family-friendly, Latin American-influenced restaurant featuring sustainable and organic ingredients from California farms, according to Richmond Mayor Tom Butt’s e-forum newsletter on Wednesday.
Built at 135 Park Place in 1904, the historic building has served over the years “as a saloon, city hall, residence, funeral parlor, speakeasy, house of prostitution, storage area and restaurant” and was also mentioned in works by Jack London, according to the Richmond Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Starting in 2009, the building served as a bar that cooked up German food and featured live music. That establishment recently closed, however, but Mayor Butt says to expect great things to come.
New owners Hector Hernandez and Heather Mervine, who have worked in restaurants and catering for more than two decades, are fulfilling a dream by opening “Brezo at Baltic Square.”
“Heather was raised on a small organic farm in Northern California and began cooking when she was 6,” Butt said in his e-forum post. “After high school, she attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and has worked in restaurants and catering ever since. Hector is from Mexico City where he was raised with 11 siblings and a mom who cooked amazing Mexican food. He came to Richmond 25 years ago and has worked in restaurants and catering ever since.”
Brezo at Baltic Square will open as soon as its liquor license is delivered, the mayor said, adding the eatery is set to open for lunch and dinner with weekend brunch.
