Groundbreaking event for North Richmond Farm set for Saturday

The community is encouraged to attend a groundbreaking event on Saturday for North Richmond Farm at the corner of Fred Jackson Way and Brookside Drive.

The free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature food, music, games, fresh produce and an exhibition of the farm design, according to Urban Tilth, the nonprofit that began working with Supervisor John Gioia’s office in 2012 on the North Richmond Farm project.

“This, by far, is the most exciting project Urban Tilth has embarked on to date,” the nonprofit stated on its website. “After three years of preparation, planning, fundraising and just down right hard work we are finally ready to begin construction.”

Urban Tilth operates seven educational urban farms and community gardens in Richmond and San Pablo, including at local schools, in order to build a sustainable and just food system in an area that has far more liquor stores than grocery stores. The group hires and trains local residents on such projects.

Saturday’s groundbreaking and interim farm project was funded by the Battery Powered Foundation, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District, Republic Services, the California Endowment, So Delicious, Ghilotti Bros., Inc., RSF Social Finance Seed Fund and Contra Costa County.
