Jim Hammack, founder and CEO of Nerd Crossing Technology Services — which was named in 2014 as the Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s small business of the year — has been appointed to serve on a national committee for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
Hammack will assume a volunteer post on the organization’s National Area Council Committee (NACC), which serves as a conduit between 54 councils across the U.S. and the organization’s National Board of Governors. NACC provides guidance on matters affecting clubs, promotes growth and development and representation for more than 4,100 member clubs serving nearly 4 million children and teens annually.
Hammack has become a highly-regarded small business entrepreneur in the community after launching Nerd Crossing in 2011 with a focus on giving back to the community. The company provides IT support at homes and businesses as well as web design and marketing services.
The company also supports a number of community organizations, including the El Sobrante Boys & Girls Club, where Hammack and his wife Lisa Azbill have been involved for nearly a decade.
“They wanted to give something back in their small community of El Sobrante, so they visited their local Boys & Girls Club one day,” NACC official said in a statement. “Jim and Lisa decided that the Club was truly a safe haven for many young people and their families in the El Sobrante area.”
The couple joined the El Sobrante club’s board in 2008. Hammack was credited with leading the local club’s transformation into a true governance board and still serves as the Board Development Chair.
He also spent five successful years as chair of the Northern California Area Council representing 43 regional clubs. Last year, he won the W. Clement Stone Award at the National Conference in Chicago, which is one of the highest honors given to a local club board member at the national level.
“We are pleased that Jim will serve in this important volunteer capacity to give voice to our local Club leadership,” said Lorraine Orr, Chief Operations Officer for BGCA. “We look forward to Jim’s leadership in Northern California and the Central Coast as we work together to create great futures for America’s kids.”
