The Traverso family is one of Richmond’s oldest families and the shoe shop they opened back in 1932 continues to thrive in the city.

The family opened its first shop at 1523 Macdonald Ave., where the BART parking garage exists today. After 41 years, they moved Traverso’s Red Wing Shoes to its current location at 12557 San Pablo Ave., near  Solano Avenue. Here’s a photo of a ribbon-cutting that followed a remodel in 1958-59.

Store manager Bill Hubacek has been with the company since 1981.

“We sell work boots, we sell New Balance tennis shoes, hiking boots,” Hubacek told the Richmond Standard. “We’ve got a, we call it full-service shoe repair, souls and heels basically.”

Hubacek says what he loves about Richmond is that it is a working class city. He added that when he heads out for a bite to eat, one place he recommends is La Strada Italian Cuisine in San Pablo.
