Masquers Playhouse, the historic Point Richmond theater that closed in March following the discovery of major damage to its primary interior support structure, aims to reopen for its 2017 season, according to a statement by the theater.
Masquers Playhouse officials have retained neighboring Point Richmond firm Interactive Resources, founded by Richmond Mayor Tom Butt, to provide seismic and ADA accessibility upgrades, the statement said.
It was the first time the remainder of a Masquers Playhouse season had to be cancelled since its founding in 1955. The original structure was built in 1903.
The seismic upgrade includes reinforcing the front of the building and ceiling joists and anchoring the perimeter walls, while ADA-compliant upgrades will be made to the front entry and restrooms, according to the theater’s statement.
“We’re an all-volunteer community theater that operates on a small budget,” Masquers Board President David Cole said. “So, we needed help from a firm that could give us an appropriate scale fix at a reasonable price. Interactive Resources and its professionals understood what we were after, listened to our wishes, and worked within our budget. With their design in hand, we can now confidently go out to the community and solicit donations to get the theater reopened on schedule.”
Interactive Resources has worked on a number of regional and local preservation projects, including the Hotel Mac, The Bank of Richmond, Mechanics Bank Trainmasters Building, East Brothers Lighthouse, and many more, the company said.
Masquers Playhouse is located at 105 Park Place. It moved to that location in 1959 and was given its current name two years later. The theater has featured nearly 400 productions of all kinds, musical and nonmusical.
During its rebuilding effort, the volunteers at Masquers Playhouse are continuing to raise funds. Tax-deductible donations are welcomed, and benefactors are encouraged to email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (510) 232-3888. For more information, please visit www.masquers.org.
