Richmond landfill’s winterization project apparent cause of area odor

Republic Services ordered to cease accepting compost materials at Parr Blvd. facility

Residents in the Point Richmond area may have recently noticed a periodic, earthy odor in the air.

The odor was apparently related to a temporary winterization operation at the Republic Services landfill facility at 1 Parr Blvd. The smell has been particularly pronounced this year due to the recent bout of heat in the Bay Area, company spokeswoman Bielle Moore said.

“It’s an imperfect storm,” Moore said. “It’s something we do every year. We just don’t usually have a heat wave.”

On Monday, the company sprinkled an agent at the facility designed to reduce the odor, Moore said. The winterization operation will continue for another 2.5 weeks. Work on the operation will be conducted Monday through Friday during the day, when most residents are at work, Moore said.

The winterization operation prepares the Parr facility for the possibility of significant rains. To prevent erosion from the rain, soil is moved around at the facility, but no new dirt is being added, Moore said.
