Police are hoping neighbors will give them blankets that they can bring to Richmond's homeless during the recent cold spell.

The Richmond Police Activities League (RPAL) wants the youth they serve to experience compassion in person this holiday season.

On Dec. 19, RPAL plans to have youth provide the community’s homeless with donated supplies and gift cards.

To prepare for that day, the organization is encouraging the community to donate items for the cause, including toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soaps, razors and shaving cream, along with face towels and gift cards of any denomination for food. See the flier below for more information.

Donations are being accepted now through Dec. 1.

“We are teaching are youth to give back,” said Vanessa Calloway, mentor project coordinator. “We are exposing them to another perspective.”

RPAL, which is also seeking community members to volunteer for its Be A Mentor program, is located at 2200 Macdonald Ave. in Richmond. Those wishing to donate can contact Calloway at (510) 621-1290 or vcalloway@rpal.org.
