The Richmond community is invited to participate in the Spring Classic Community Chess Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 13, which is free thanks to co-sponsors West Coast Chess Alliance and Richmond Recreation Department.

The tournament will be held at the Richmond Recreation Department, 3230 MacDonald Ave.

“Players of every level are welcome to play and enjoy a lively and competitive event suited for any lover of the game of chess,”  said TC Ball, who heads the West Coast Chess Alliance.

The Aug. 13 tournament, with both rated and non-rated sections,  is quad format, with four players per table playing three games. Youth will be grouped by age and playing experience. Chess set are provided. Pre-registration is encouraged by contacting TC Ball at (510) 439-6311 or

For those wishing to practice for the tournament, the West Coast Chess Alliance will also be attending the Richmond Main Street Initiative’s annual Music on the Main event, which takes place Wednesday, Aug. 10, in the parking lot at the corner of Marina Way and Macdonald Avenue. Chess enthusiasts can learn how to play, practice their moves and meet new chess buddies, RMSI said on Facebook.
