In a statement, Mayor Tom Butt’s office says the sounding of several warning sirens that could be heard across Richmond about 3 p.m. on Tuesday was accidental.

Officials with the Contra Costa County Community Warning System (CWS) confirmed the”system malfunctioned” and there was no incident at the Chevron Refinery or other facility, the statement said. Crews were upgrading the system when the alarms were sounded.

“This accidental sounding ended as quickly as possible,” the mayor’s office statement read. “Again, there is no hazardous materials release and no danger to the public.”
