A solo-vehicle crash Tuesday on Richmond Parkway has claimed the life of the driver, an official with the Contra Costa County coroner’s office said Wednesday.

Michael Smith, 24, of Richmond, succumbed to the injuries he suffered after his car veered off the roadway and crashed head-on into a tree in the center divide near Hilltop Drive.

The collision occurred at about 9:10 a.m., according to police, and caused the closure of Richmond Parkway between Hilltop Drive and Giant Road until approximately 3 p.m.

A passenger in the vehicle, a 30-year-old San Pablo man, sustained major injuries and was listed in serious condition at a local hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.

  1. Don’t let his name fool you. He was a very special one, that Michael.
