Authorities are investigating the death of a Richmond man who became unresponsive during a struggle with law enforcement officials at Marin General Hospital this week.
The deceased has been identified as Silivenusi Namata Ravono, age 46.
The incident unfolded about 11:31 p.m. Wednesday, when Marin County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call that Ravono had fled from the hospital and needed to be returned, as he was suffering a psychiatric break and was a threat to himself and others.
Sheriff’s deputies and Central Marin Police Authority officers began searching the area and found Ravono on a nearby street, South Eliseo Drive. He briefly resisted being detained, but was placed in a patrol car without the use of weapons or other controls. He was transported back to the hospital for treatment, sheriff’s officials said.
After being returned to the hospital and having his handcuffs removed, Ravono resisted again, deputies said.
According to the sheriff’s office: “The man became violent and physically resisted the deputies, officers and hospital security personnel. During the ensuing struggle, the man became unresponsive. Law enforcement personnel immediately began resuscitation efforts. Emergency medical personnel were summoned to the scene, where additional lifesaving efforts were attempted. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical staff.
A deputy suffered a “significant head injury” during the struggle and was treated and soon after released from the hospital.
The incident is now undergoing an independent investigation by San Rafael police and the Marin County District Attorney’s Office. In addition, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Coroner office will be conducting their own external investigation into Ravono’s cause of death.
