Two people suffered major injuries Tuesday morning after their car veered off the roadway on Richmond Parkway and crashed into a tree near Hilltop Drive.

The crash occurred at about 9:10 a.m. and caused the closure of Richmond Parkway between Hilltop Drive and Giant Road for several hours, with reopening of the roadway expected at 3 p.m.

Responding police found the crashed vehicle between Giant Rd and Hilltop Dr.

The vehicle’s two occupants, a 24 year old Richmond man and a 30 year old San Pablo man, sustained major injuries, police said.

The 24 year old, who was driving, was listed in critical condition while his passenger was listed in serious condition at a local hospital.

“Based on witness statements, it appears that the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree, head-on, in the center divide,” police said. “There were no other vehicles or pedestrians involved in this solo-vehicle accident.”
