A San Pablo man, 46, suffered major injuries Monday morning when his SUV crashed into the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge toll plaza, according to Bay City News, citing a report from a California Highway Patrol official.

The man, who hasn’t been identified, was allegedly speeding in the westbound lanes in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado about 5:15 a.m., the CHP said. He steered the vehicle into a safety attenuator while attempting to switch from the far left lane to the No. 2 lane, officials said.

According to Bay City News: “The truck began overturning and the top of its cab struck the toll plaza booth, causing major damage to the truck and booth.”

Despite coming to rest on its wheels, the driver was trapped inside. Officials with CHP and the Richmond Fire Department closed three traffic lanes while the driver was removed. He was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland with major, life-threatening injuries.

The crash closed two of the three toll lanes until 6:34 a.m., but the No. 2 toll lane still needed to undergo repairs at that time.
