Arrests made in Vallejo hit-and-run collision that killed Richmond man

23rd Street fight turns fatal

Two arrests have been made in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Vallejo earlier this month that killed Richmond resident Matthew Bennett, 47.

Dominic Terrell Smith, 25, of Vallejo turned himself in at the Suisun City Police Department on Saturday, according to Bay City News, citing law enforcement officials.

Smith is believed to be the driver of a 2002 Nissan Maxima that struck Bennett as he was crossing the street in the 400 block of Sonoma Boulevard on Aug. 11.

Also arrested was the registered owner of the Nissan, 45-year-old Walter Pineda of Richmond, who allegedly filed a false police report claiming his Nissan was stolen. He was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact. He posted bail and was released.

The night of the crash, Smith, Pineda and Taylor Warren Alexander Gallon, 21 — who remains at large — had reportedly stopped by a liquor store before the collision occurred, according to Bay City News.

After striking Bennett, who had been crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, the driver failed to remain at the scene. But one thing did remain: The Nissan’s license plate which fell off, and which police recovered. The vehicle was found the following day in Vallejo.
