Nearly 1,000 kids benefit from backpack and school supplies giveaway at Rescue Mission

These local kids are not only excited for school, they’re prepared.

Nearly 1,000 kids signed up to receive backpacks filled with school supplies at the Bay Area Rescue Mission giveaway event on Thursday sponsored by Chevron Richmond.

The students and their families gathered at the Rescue Mission’s facility at 123 Macdonald Ave. to receive their backpacks containing binders, paper, spiral notebooks, folders, colored pencils, markers, glue sticks and more.

The event was both funded and staffed by Chevron. The Chevron employees helped stuff the backpacks in the morning and hand them out to kids in the afternoon.

Rescue Mission official Woody Tausend called the giveaway “a big success for sure.”

“The expressions on the kids’ (and parents’) faces tell the story,” he said.

The backpack giveaway is an annual partnership between Chevron and the Rescue Mission, a nonprofit providing shelter and resources for the Bay Area’s homeless and needy.

The company partners with the nonprofit on a number of initiatives throughout the year.

On Sept. 21, the Bay Area Rescue Mission is still set to hold its annual Back to School Block Party at Nevin Park, also sponsored by Chevron. Check out some of the Rescue Mission’s images from the event:
