Pinole resident William Southall, a rising vocalist from the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, has earned four-year, full-tuition scholarships to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, school officials announced.
Southall received the award at at Boston event Tuesday night that was emceed by actor-comedian Sinbad and featured Celtics legend Cedric Maxwell, according to school officials.
He was among eight young artists receiving scholarships at the event. Other recipients live in New Orleans, Boston, Vancouver B.C. and Ohio.
What all eight awardees had in common was their involvement in Berklee City Music, a program providing contemporary music education to youth in underserved communities across the U.S. and in Canada. The program, offered to students at little to no cost, operates in 44 communities and serves more than 29,000 students annually. In Richmond, it is provided by the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts.
