43 ramp meters on I-80 to begin operating all day starting Tuesday

As we reported last week, the I-80 SMART Corridor system — which aims to relieve congestion from the Carquinez Bridge to the Bay Bridge — is expected to be fully activated within two months.

On Tuesday, 43 ramp meters along that stretch of highway, in both eastbound and westbound directions, will be activated throughout the day, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to Caltrans. Last week, they were activated during only the morning commute.

The ramp meters are one piece of the $79 million project that aims to relieve congestion.

“Ramp meters improve safety, enhance mobility and address freeway congestion by controlling traffic demand so freeway capacity is not exceeded,” the transit agency said.

Meters also will be operating on weekends depending on traffic conditions.

Caltrans warns motorists that there may be delays due to the activated ramp-meters for the first few days, but the agency said it will monitor conditions and adjust accordingly.

As part of the I-80 SMART Corridor system, electronic signs have also been installed along the highway and on local streets that provide information to drivers that aims to prevent congestion.
