A San Pablo man allegedly jumped into San Francisco Bay Monday morning in an attempt to avoid an arrest connected to a fight with his girlfriend — and it wasn’t until after nearly an hour of negotiations with police before he returned to land, according to the San Rafael Police Department.
The incident unfolded at the nonprofit Conservation Corp North Bay office at 27 Larkspur St., where the suspect — 22-year-old Curtis Myron Odom — had gone to pick up a paycheck, police Lt.Alan Piombo said.
Outside of those offices, he got into a struggle with his 24-year-old girlfriend, also a San Pablo resident, for the keys to her 2008 Dodge Cavalier, Piombo said. He allegedly pulled her hair during the struggle and drove off after she exited the vehicle.
Odom returned to the scene while San Rafael firefighters were speaking with the victim and attempted to coax the woman back to his car. But then police arrived and he fled, driving 70 mph on East Francisco Boulevard toward Main Street, where he collided with a vehicle and injured its 53-year-old driver, police said.
Odom abandoned the Dodge, running toward San Quentin and then jumping into the Bay on the south side of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, Piombo said.
He refused to leave waist-deep waters and demanded his girlfriend come to the scene, Piombo said. After negotiations that lasted nearly an hour, he was taken into custody.
After an examination at a local hospital, Odom was booked into Marin County Jail on numerous charges.
