This week, For Richmond was selected as a finalist in the Play Everywhere Challenge, a $1 million national contest to award innovative ideas that make play easy and accessible for kids and families.

The Challenge is hosted by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit focused on bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all children, particularly those living in financially challenged environments

For Richmond created an innovative plan to create pop-up play spaces in Richmond by opening a street near public housing to unstructured play for six hours one Sunday per quarter. The space allows kids and their parents to play games, create street art, make arts and crafts, have fun and get active — spurring neighborhood bonding and building healthy play habits.

The “Pop Up Play Days” project was selected as a finalist out of a pool of more than 1,000 entries nationwide. Winners will be announced in the fall.
