The public will have a chance to be heard on Tuesday regarding the proposed sale of the former Adams Middle School in Richmond to a local charter school organization, which faces opposition from West Contra Costa Unified (WCCUSD) teachers and parents.
WCCUSD is holding a session at 6 p.m. at DeJean Middle School, 3400 Macdonald Ave., where the Board of Education will discuss the district’s potential sale and allow community members to speak during a public comment session. The district also steered residents to this Q&A on its website.
The long-vacant Adams Middle School at 5000 Patterson Circle in East Richmond Heights was closed in 2009 due to seismic concerns and has since attracted vandals and arsonists. WCCUSD says it doesn’t have the funds to rebuild the school.
Caliber: Beta Academy, a Richmond charter school currently housed in portable classrooms near Kennedy High, has proposed purchasing the property for well below market value in order to rebuild a K-8 school.
