NIAD Art Center plans to open August exhibits with live music

NIAD Art Center to host live music Saturday afternoons during the fall

The NIAD Art Center will open its August exhibits with a reception featuring live music from the bands XOXO Volcano and The Development.

The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 13 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The music will usher in a new slate of artwork at the center fostering artists with disabilities.

From Aug. 5 through Aug. 26, the Main Gallery and Backroom will feature “Lunch Munch Blade,” organized by Lisa Solomon and Justine Frischmann. The exhibit is “a celebration of the candy colored pop sensibilities and punk ethic” from a number of great NIAD artists.

An exhibit in NIAD Art Center’s Annex Space will feature the works of teacher, painter and sculptor Tony Dattilo, who recently became very caught up in wood carving. Dattilo’s work “deals loosely with contemporary notions of martyrdom and how hardship and discomfort form a kind of cultural currency,” NIAD Art Center said.

And in the Storefront space, ceramic figurines by Adonia Douglas will be featured. Her new pieces, about the height of a soda bottle, portray women from around the globe, the art center said.

NIAD’s galleries are located at 551 23rd St. in Richmond. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 am though 4 pm, and Saturday, noon to 4 pm. For more information, please telephone (510) 620-0290 or visit
