Dozens of local high school students who are headed home from a weeklong engineering camp can not only say they’ve stayed in a college dorm, but also that they know how to build a durable bridge.
On Thursday, students and teachers from the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) tested out the robots they programmed and bridges they built during an annual summer engineering program held at California State University East Bay (CSUEB).
Teams were tasked with programming robots to maneuver around a course, as well as design and build a bridge from balsa wood that can withstand the weight of the robot.
The Discover Engineering Summer Residency Program, sponsored by Chevron, provided 43 students and several WCCUSD teachers an opportunity to stay on campus for a week and focus on their projects, which centered on engineering-related learning activities.
Students not only designed and built bridges in team situations, they experienced college life and learn from professors and industry professionals who volunteer their time for the program.
The professional development connection was made possible through a partnership with the Contra Costa Economic Partnership (CCEP), a coalition of business, education and public sector leaders dedicated to promoting economic vitality and quality of life in the East Bay.
The students were selected based on their participation in Project Lead the Way and MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), two leading STEM programs offered at their schools and supported by Chevron.
“Once again this year, the kids are very excited to have a real college experience, to learn from one another as well as college professors and industry professionals,” said Andrea Bailey, community engagement manager for the Chevron Richmond Refinery.
