Richmond firefighters preparing for busy fire season

The Richmond Fire Department is urging property owners to be prepared for another threatening wildfire season, saying it saw a 61-percent increase in the number of vegetation fires it responded to last year.

The department responded to 55 vegetation fires, including grass and brush, in 2015, and 34 the previous year, according to City Manager Bill Lindsay’s newsletter.

In order to prepare for the dry season, local firefighters are inspecting all of their equipment and apparatus and replacing hoses meant for structures with hoses meant for wild-land firefighting, the department said., They are also inspecting fire trails and increasing training.

Property owners can also take action to protect from wildfire threats in “high fire danger areas.”
