Richmond couple paints garage in rainbow colors in memory of Orlando victims

While the city lowered its flags to half-staff in memory of the victims of the Orlando nightclub massacre, a couple in the North & East neighborhood decided to pay homage in their own touching way.

Felix Hunziker, a member of the Richmond Police Commission, and his wife, Audrey dela Cruz, painted their garage in the rainbow colors following the Sunday morning tragedy.

“I have no words to express the tragedy in Orlando, nor do I understand why anyone would do such a thing,” dela Cruz said in a Facebook post. “So Felix and I painted over the French flag that he previously painted when Paris was attacked. Our garage door has become our voice.”

Hunziker said he had painted the French flag in solidarity, having remembered seeing Parisians around a huge U.S. flag following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

He said he “wanted to reciprocate that touching gesture.”

While painting the garage in rainbow colors, the couple received help from their new neighbor Sarah. Check out the progression from photos posted by the couple:
