Richmond resident Roshonda Walker is finally following through on an idea that’s been on her mind for some time, and it literally has her jumping for joy.

Walker is planning a community Jump Rope To End Violence event in Richmond on July 23, something she hopes will unite the community in a fun, healthy, and positive way.

“It has been an idea on my heart and now it’s time to follow through with it,” said Walker, who said she lives right off of Cutting Boulevard. “I will be doing this event on my own unless I get sponsors, which are welcomed.”

The idea was partly inspired by the American Heart Association’s health-promoting Jump Rope for Heart events that would visit her school as she was growing up.

Walker says a location for her event hasn’t been determined yet. She has created a Facebook page for Jump Rope to End Violence and hopes support for her event will continue to grow.

Walker envisions the jump roping to be joined by raffles, competition and much more on July 23.

“I want to get our kids back to being active as well as raise awareness to the violence of our community,” Walker said. “I also want to show these youngsters that old school can beat that new school.. Lol.”
