Richmond police arrest suspected WWI cannon thief

Richmond police said Thursday they have arrested the man suspected of stealing a World War I-era cannon from the city’s Veteran’s Memorial Hall on 23rd Street last month.

Dezi Adsuara, 44, of Vallejo, was arrested Tuesday afternoon, one week after police released his photo and identity in connection with the case, Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan said.

After stealing the one-ton, five-foot, brass-and-iron cannon outside Veterans Memorial Hall during the early morning hours of May 1, Adsuara then sold it for $1,200, police said. After watching a TV news report about the theft, the man who purchased the cannon called police saying he did not know it had been stolen.

Police picked it up from the buyer in Martinez and returned it to Veterans Memorial Hall, where it has existed since 1947.

The ensuing investigation led to a warrant for Adsuara’s arrest.
