Improved Shields-Reid Park to enjoy grand re-opening June 11

For about a year, much of Shields-Reid Park in North Richmond was closed to the public for renovation.

But the park has since reopened with a gleaming new baseball field, dugouts and other amenities, and it will enjoy a grand-reopening ceremony on Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The ribbon-cutting for the park will occur in conjunction with Community Awareness Day, which is part of the annual weeklong NeighborWorks Week, a national celebration held locally by the Community Housing Development Corporation (CHDC).

NeighborWorks Week in North Richmond begins on Monday, June 6, and runs through Friday, June 10, with Love Your Block neighborhood beautification events along Chesley Avenue.

The week culminates Saturday, June 11 with a mini-festival at Sheilds-Reid Park and grand re-opening. North Richmond residents will have access to all sorts of community resources as well as free food, games, music, fun activities prizes and more.

“CHDC is a member of NeighborWorks America, so we always participate,” said Janie Holland, a CHDC director, adding this year’s event became even more special when the city approached her organization about teaming together on a grand re-opening oat the park.
