The 375 students who make up the inaugural class of Richmond Promise scholars will be recognized at a ceremony June 2.
Congressman Mark DeSaulnier will deliver opening remarks at the event, which takes place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Richmond Memorial Auditorium, 403 Civic Center Plaza.
Richmond Promise offers every Richmond and North Richmond resident graduating from high school up to $1,500 annually, or up to $6,000 for four years, to attend a community college or four-year college or university. The program was made possible by a $35 million grant from Chevron, which was part of a $90 million community benefits agreement connected to the upcoming $1 billion modernization of the Richmond Refinery.
The Promise program is not just about a check, but about installing a college readiness system that assists students in obtaining financial assistance such as federal grants and other resources so that college can become a reality for them.
The program’s ultimate aim is to create a college-going culture in the city where students know that if they put in the work, they will be able to afford education beyond high school.
The June 2 event is part of that mission, according to Richmond Promise Executive Director Jessie Stewart.
“This event will honor the Richmond Promise Scholars who are owning their future and continuing to higher education, recognize our civic and community partnerships critical to their success, and celebrate what this investment means to students, families, and the Richmond community,”Stewart said in a statement.
Students will be recognized in a ceremony that includes dinner and a photo booth. They will also hear from keynote speaker Satahi Salamanca Espinoza, founder and CEO of Dreamer’s Roadmap.
The event is free but space is limited. Student scholars may bring up to three friends or family members.
