We told you recently about how Salesian alum Jahvid Best, a former star Detroit Lions running back who was forced to retire due to concussions, is even faster now that he has transitioned his career to track-and-field.
This week, we learned from the St. Lucia News Online that Best is trying out for the St. Lucia Olympic track team, with his focus on the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Best’s father, David, is from the Caribbean island and he has a lot of other family there, but the 27-year-old athlete is in the process of obtaining citizenship.
The newspaper also said Best visited St. Lucia when he was young and also in 2012, when he “ran the beach every morning” as part of his NFL offseason workouts.
In 2010, upon entering the NFL, Best “proudly showed off the tattoo of the island map on his left arm, along with the names of his parents and sister, and the words NEVER SATISFIED,” the newspaper said.
A track star in high school, Best has been training at the esteemed ALTIS facility in Phoenix.
To qualify for the Olympics, he needs to record a qualifying 100m time of 10.16 and compete at a meet in St. Lucia. On April 2 at a meet in San Diego, Best recorded exactly that time, with some wind assistance, St. Lucia News Online reported.
Best hopes to beat that time in order to qualify for the Rio Olympics, which takes place in August.
