Richmond’s own Devin Lars, who was named one of the nation’s top entrepreneurs under age 30 at the United Nations in New York City in 2014, is set to deliver the keynote address at the Youth Summit at Craneway Pavilion in Richmond on May 17.
The Richmond Community Foundation, the nonprofit hosting the 7th Annual Summit, “Building the Next Generation Workforce,” alongside the West Conra Costa Unified School District, announced Lars’ involvement with great jubilation on Wednesday.
After all, Lars brings with him a pop culture influence that can connect with youth and adults alike at the summit, which aims to bring educators and businesses together in one space in order to develop career pathways for local youth. The company Lars co-founded has produced clothing worn by Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, 50 Cent and T-Pain, to name a few.
The company has humble beginnings, starting with a homemade wooden screenprinter at Lars’ grandfathers garage in Richmond.
Now, Lars is CEO and co-founder of Doing Everything Different and D&D Designs & Screen Printing, LLC, which prints for major clients such as Tesla Motors, iHeartMedia, McDonald’s, The NFL, Google and the TV show Criminals Minds.
Lars is one of several prominent guest speakers attending the summit, which runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 17. This year, the event features a career fair for students from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., when they will directly link to employers and education leaders.
The summit will also place emphasis on careers of the future related to STEM, science, technology, engineering and math.
“The Summit includes inspiring speakers and presentations from programs throughout the Bay Area, as well as roundtable discussions to tackle challenges and explore opportunities,” organizers said. “In addition to presenting engaging workforce programs that actively train and develop young people for careers, the Summit explores academic, vocational, training and mentoring programs targeting underserved youth, and community college students.”
Assemblymember Tony Thurmond is among the lost list of influential guest speakers and panelists. Meals for the summit will be catered by local eateries such as Up and Under Pub & Grill in Point Richmond, Salute E Vita Ristorante, Sa Wad Dee Thai Restaurant and more.
More than 30 booths at the summit’s “resource village” will be offering opportunities to high school and college-aged youth.
