As East Bay communities call for security cameras to monitor freeways that have seen 28 shootings since November, the California Highway Patrol indicated in a press release Thursday that it has made progress in some cases.
Since February, five suspects — some believed to have been involved in multiple incidents — have been arrested.
Three suspects were arrested back on Feb. 1 for a shooting that occurred that same day. They were identified as Oscar Torres, Zackery Lopez, and Antonio Navarro.
On April 2, Leroy McCoy was arrested in connection with an April 1 incident on Highway 4 in Pittsburg.
Also, a fifth individual who is not being identified has also been taken into custody. CHP believes the suspect, who is not being named due to the highly active investigation, is connected with more than one shooting over the last few months along highway I-80.
The shootings, mostly along Interstate Highway 80 and Highway 4, have killed four and injured dozens. Many of the incidents are believed to be gang related.
The incidents have prompted community members along with five Bay Area mayors to call on the state to install surveillance cameras at on and off ramps and to upgrade existing live traffic camera network.
The letter signed by the mayors of Hercules, Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole and El Cerrito wrote this letter to Gov. Jerry Brown:
