A woman found passed out drunk in her apartment was arrested after the 3-year-old child she was supposed to be watching was spotted “walking by himself in traffic,” according to the El Cerrito Police Department.

Thankfully, an alert AC Transit bus driver who spotted the child in the area of Carlson Boulevard and Central Avenue at 12:36 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, convinced him to board the bus, police said. The driver then called police, who figured out the boy had been at a nearby apartment, where the 52-year-old woman who was supposed to be watching the child was found passed out and intoxicated, police said.

“The boy apparently walked out of the apartment undetected,” police stated in its blotter. “The boy’s parents were summoned to the scene. The woman was arrested for child endangerment, booked and released on a citation.”

Her identity wasn’t immediately available.

The heroic AC Transit employee was driving the 71 line. Her name is Celeste, one of her colleagues told us.

“Not only did she have him board her bus, she refused to leave his side until his parents arrived,” said the colleague, who at the time of the incident was driving a bus in front of Celeste’s.

The incident was reported in the El Cerrito police blotter.
