A flurry of East Bay freeway shooting incidents since November continued Tuesday night with a person shot on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 in Hercules, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was struck in the leg by gunfire at about 9:15 p.m. just west of state Highway 4.

The shooting shut down two eastbound lanes along with four lanes on Pinole Valley Road.

The suspect vehicle was described as a black Chevrolet El Camino with tinted windows, CHP said.

Roughly 20 shootings have occurred on East Bay highways since November, prompting some jurisdictions to request the installation of security cameras.

In reaction the the shootings, a group of neighbors have come together to demand a concerted response from law enforcement. They suggest that police departments team with CHP to monitor the highways and also want working cameras to monitor the roadways.

“We cannot even feel safe on our own freeways…it’s ridiculous and madness,” Virginia Velasquez told us. “This is going on way too long and it appears that nobody is doing anything serious to circumvent this from continuing to happen.”
