De Anza baseball team scores upset in NCS opener

Huge news out of Marin County!

On Tuesday, the De Anza High Dons recorded a big upset of high-powered San Marin High 4-1 in the opener of the North Coast Section Division III playoffs, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

De Anza entered as the No. 15 seed and San Marin the No. 2 seed.

But thanks in large part to the stellar pitching of Ricky Hernandez, who recorded eight strikeouts, four walks and just two hits, the Dons will be moving on in the playoffs, the IJ reported.

The win continues an impressive season by the Dons, who have a 20-6 record and went 10-0 in Tri-County Athletic League play.

Last year, the matchup between De Anza and San Marin in the NCS opener went the opposite direction, with San Marin handily winning 15-2. Hernandez pitched in that loss, but San Marin’s baseball coach said Tuesday the De Anza pitcher has “matured over the year and has done a hell of a job,” the IJ reported.

In terms of scoring, Christian Deir Martinis’ single allowed Justin Summers and Jalen Placide to reach home plate in the first inning. In the fifth inning, Placide and Hernandez each recorded RBIs, according to the IJ.

De Anza coach Brandon Fredzess told the IJ that he believed his team deserved a higher seeding given their performance this year. He also praised Hernandez for “busting his butt all season.”
