Richmond holding sign-up event for free home solar systems

Eligible Richmond residents interested in receiving a free solar system and installation at their homes are encouraged to attend a sign-up event on Wednesday, June 1.

The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room at 440 Civic Center Plaza. Light snacks will be provided.

The city is hosting the event alongside nonprofit partner GRID Alternatives, which has already installed systems on more than 150 homes for free in the Richmond area, funded by the city and state.

The ongoing partnership hopes to get another 135 local households outfitted.

GRID Alternatives often partners with local businesses such as Chevron Richmond to help with the installations. It also gets help from local career-training programs such as RichmondBUILD.

To be eligible for free solar, Richmond and North Richmond residents must own and live in their own home, and make less than 80-percent of area median income (the fliers below provide a chart that makes it easy to see if you qualify).

The systems provide energy cost savings to the homeowners.

An additional 135 households equipped with solar will “create more than $2.5 million in energy cost savings for families and prevent more than 5,700 tons of greenhouse gases over the systems lifetimes,” according to the city.

To attend the June 1 sign up event, RSVP here. To enroll at the workshop please bring copies of: 1) a latest tax return (two pages) for each member of the household; 2) one PG&E bill (all pages); and 3) either a mortgage statement, insurance statement, property tax bill or copy of deed to apply.
