RYSE youth set to perform second original multimedia production

The youth at Richmond’s RYSE Center have produced, written and are set to perform their second multi-media production, called Fairytale, at the El Cerrito Performing Arts Theater on May 14 and May 15.

The shows run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 14 and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 15 at the theater at 540 Asbury Ave. in El Cerrito.

Fairytale combines cast-written monologues, film and dance to tell the story of Briella’s tumultuous relationship with Princeton, who she believes is her prince charming that has come to save her. But Briella learns the hard way that she must be her own hero in a production that examines abusive relationships as well as gender stereotypes and rape culture.

The production’s artist director was Donté Clark, while Nya McDowell produced the music. Both are nationally recognized artists who were recently invited to attend a youth summit at the White House in Washington D.C. for young innovators of color.

While Fairytale is meant for mature audiences ages 13 and over, the RYSE Center wants at least 30-percent of the 1,200 tickets available to the performances to be young people.

The Center is encouraging youth organizations and schools to attend the youth production as both an entertaining and educational experience. To foster such trips, RYSE is offering discounts for youth groups and individuals.

Possible ways to get youth involved:

*   Group Discounts (10 or more): For 10 or more people (not just students), $2 off every ticket.
*   Give extra credit to students: If you don’t have the time or energy to gather a group together but want them to see the production, offer them extra credit! Their tickets.
*   Presentation in staff meetings, classrooms & assemblies: Want us to talk about Fairytale in person? The young people behind the production can come to your staff meetings, classrooms, or all-school assemblies for a 15 minute presentation about the show.

If you are interested in any of these, please fill out the form here.

Tickets can be purchased at RYSE (205 41st St) or online here.
