Richmond native and Duke student-athlete wins service award

Urina Harrell, a Richmond native and student-athlete at Duke University, was recently named a recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s (ACC) Top Six for Service Award.

Harrell, who graduated from Junipero Serra High in Gardena, Calif., has worked hard in the classroom, track and pretty much everywhere else. She organized a campus-wide Warm Soles Sock Drive that led to more than 500 socks going to the local Durham community.

She “has done a spectacular job giving back to both the Duke and Durham communities and beyond,” according to her school.

Harrell, an honor roll student who competes in the shot put for the Blue Devils, also found time to participate in the Duke Oxford Housing Authority Tours and to offer mentoring for the Brian K. Betts College Connections Program (women’s track and field).

  1. Thank you for the story on Urina and her service in the community. There is one correction in the article. She is from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA.

  2. When I initially commented I clicked the &#2t02;No8ify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get several e-mails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service? Bless you!
