The community garden movement in the Richmond area has been thriving with help from groups like Urban Tilth, and now it’s inspiring a similar concept in Mississippi.

The city of Gulfport has embarked on a project to turn 2 acres of land into a community garden that will be self-sustaining with help from a farmers’ market, according to the Sun Herald.

Ruth Story leads the nonprofit that operates the new Gulfport garden. She said she “got the idea for a community garden when she saw a beautiful one several years back in Richmond, Calif.”

The Gulfport property that is becoming a garden “hasn’t served any purposes since the storm (Katrina),” David Parker, the city’s economic development director, told the Sun Herald.

“I can’t think of a better purpose than a community garden that can teach kids about growing and what goes into gardening,” he said.
