A 16-year-old Bay Point girl was shot to death inside a Richmond home Monday afternoon, and a 19-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the homicide, police said.

The shooting occurred inside a residence in the 400 block of S. 12th Street, Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan said.

The victim, identified of Mauriana Seymore of Bay Point — who was about to be enrolled at a Bay Point-area school — was fatally shot in the upper torso, Tan said. The suspect, who was taken into custody the same day near the crime scene, has been identified as Brandon Payne of Richmond, Tan said. Police provided Payne’s photo above and say they recovered a firearm.

Police  have not named a motive for the murder or stated the relationship between the suspect and victim.

“We hope for swift justice to bring closure to Mauriana’s family in the wake of this heinous act of violence,” Tan said.

It was Richmond’s 10th homicide in 2016.
