Richmond City Manager Bill Lindsay announced Tuesday that police veteran Allywn Brown has been officially named the city’s top cop.
Chief Brown (pictured on left), who was named interim chief following the recent departure of current Tucson police Chief Chris Magnus, has served in the department since 1984. The accomplished and well-respected cop has both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in human resource management. He aided efforts to install a community-policing model in the RPD that has been credited with causing significant crime reduction in the city. Given RPD’s success, it made sense to hire a chief from within the department, Lindsay said.
“The department is going in the right direction with what has developed into a national model for community policing,” Lindsay said at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. “Selecting a new chief from within our organization will allow us to keep this positive momentum.”
Lindsay called other candidates he interviewed from within the department “very impressive.”
“They inspired in me confidence in the Richmond Police Department command staff, and really in the entire departmental organization,” he said.
But of all the candidates, Brown remained the most qualified, Lindsay said.
“I have the utmost confidence that Chief Brown will continue the forward trajectory of the police department and effectively meet the many challenges we continue to face,” the city manager said.
Lindsay’s decision was praised by Mayor Tom Butt as well as Chief Magnus.
“I want to congratulate Chief Brown and we are all very excited to work alongside him,” Mayor Butt said in a Facebook post that included the above picture.
Magnus added in a Twitter post: “So happy and impressed my former Asst. Chief Allwyn Brown was appointed to permanent status as Chief of Richmond PD.”
