Brookvale Pharmacy was named the 2016 Small Business of the Year by the San Pablo Economic Development Corporation.

Owned by Josh Speck, Brookvale Pharmacy at 2101 Vale Rd. finally captured the award after receiving honorable mention last year.

After purchasing Brookvale Pharmacy two years ago, Speck, who formerly worked at his family’s Central Pharmacy in Richmond, implemented a free delivery service for customers similar to The business has also expanded with a location in Pinole.

“We’re definitely developing and growing our prescription delivery business,” Speck said. “So if anybody wants their prescriptions delivered to their house for free, that’s what we’re good at, that’s where we’re growing. Not just seniors or people that can’t drive or get out, but anybody that’s too busy. We will set up a delivery time and deliver it to your home the next day for free. We do about 10 deliveries per day. We’d like to get that to 100 deliveries a day.”

Taking honorable mention this year in the Small Business Award was Alex’s Giant Burger at 1789 Rumrill Rd., which has 4.5 out of 5 stars from 77 reviews on The most recent review by a new San Pablo resident called the food and service “top notch.”

“The main thing that draws me to Alex’s is the price,” the reviewer added. “Everything here is reasonable and the service seriously tops it off. ”

The small business contest accepted nominations from the public from Jan. 5 through Feb. 29. The nomination data was then evaluated by San Pablo EDC staff on a number of criteria, including a business’ economic benefit to San Pablo, its customer service and its community involvement.
