Betty Reid Soskin, the famous 94-year-old National Park Service ranger who introduced President Obama at last year’s National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, is scheduled to speak at the Rosie the Riveter Trust‘s annual benefit dinner April 9 in Richmond.
The event, which will feature a 1940s ambiance (related attire encouraged!), will be held at the historic Galileo Club at 371 South 23rd St., which is less than a mile from where the Richmond’s Kaiser Shipyards operated during WWII.
The benefit begins with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Sponsorships are available beginning at $1,000, and individual tickets can be purchased for $150 through March 21, or $175 if purchased after.
Proceeds support educational programs at the Rosie the Riveter Visitor’s Center, with some of the funds raised supporting efforts to bring fourth graders from local schools to the park’s Visitors Center as part of the Every Kid in a Park initiative.
Soskin, the nation’s oldest park ranger who during WWII worked in a segregated union office in Richmond, will be joined by fellow guest speaker Doug McConnell, who hosted Bay Area Back Roads on KRON-TV for 16 years and currently hosts OpenRoad Sundays on NBC Bay Area. McConnell will preview segments from his current film project capturing the social changes spawned by WWII and the home front experience as viewed by Soskin, who continues to give historical tours of Richmond’s Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park.
Event sponsors include Kaiser Permanente, the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers, the Northern California Carpenters Regional Council, The Permanente Federation, and Chevron Richmond.
