Locals are getting excited about upcoming plans to build a new San Pablo Library that is nearly three times the size of the current library and will include a coffee shop.
Construction on the new library at San Pablo Avenue and Church Lane is targeted to begin in July and be completed by early 2017, according to the city. The current county branch is located at 2300 El Portal Drive.
The new library will occupy 22,000 square feet and will be LEED certified. Residents and elected officials alike have applauded its spacious, modern design, which received unanimous Planning Commission approval.

The facility will include so much more than library books. It will have a full-service coffee shop and naturally-lit lobby/marketplace. Plans include various program rooms including group study spaces, a quiet reading area for adults, teen area, children’s area, technology lab, conference rooms and community meeting space.
A Walgreens at the project site will move a short distance to make way for the new library.
