El Cerrito police Capt. Paul Keith will be named interim police chief after the departure of Chief Sylvia Moir, who will start her new gig as chief of the police department in Tempe, Ariz. next month.

City Manager Scott Hanin announced Keith will begin his new role on March 7.

Keith has been with the El Cerrito Police Department for more than 15 years and is now second-in-command to the chief. He currently oversees the department’s operations, goals and budgeting. He has a Bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration, from California State University, East Bay.

“I have every confidence that he will continue the positive momentum of the department and know he has the full support of the City and the Police Department in this new endeavor,” Hanin said in a statement.

Hanin said he will provide additional updates on the ongoing search for a permanent chief in the future.
