Sitting out on the patio between an art gallery and colorful garden, it’s hard to imagine you are in a city, let alone a large storage facility near Interstate 580.
If you needed further proof that art can take you to magical places, head over to BridgeMakerARTS, a new contemporary art center located inside Bridge Self-Storage and Art Spaces at 23 Maine Ave. in Richmond.
The storage facility has attracted positive attention from the community since father-son owners Jim and Jeff Wright cleverly transformed some of their storage units into art and community meeting spaces.
At the end of last year, the nonprofit BridgeMakerARTS opened in the space with the aim of furthering those goals. The art center intends to host compelling exhibitions and art talks and to find ways to aid in art enrichment in Richmond.
On Saturday, you’ll have an opportunity to see the new art center for yourself, as it is set to hold an opening reception for its next exhibition, called “Salt,” from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibit features four artists using salt as either their subject matter or medium, and includes photography from the South Bay salt flats, said exhibit curator and artist Gwynessa Aetherwyn.
The exhibit runs through March 26, with BridgeMakerARTS’ gallery hours going Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Along with art exhibitions, BridgeMakerARTS hosts free art talks with artists, produces video interviews with artists to spread their message, holds satellite events, and more, said Barbosa Prince (pictured below), an artist and the nonprofit’s head of curatorial. Calls for artists are made through the BridgeMakerARTS website and have attracted artists locally and internationally.
“We’re located in this remote area that’s kind of in between the bustling Richmond and Point Richmond; it’s a cool place,” Barbosa Prince said. “One thing is we’re bringing a bit of revitalization to the area. We’ve been reaching out to the community, trying to get people interested in what we’re doing.”
