The memorial service for Richmond Police Officer Augustine “Gus” Vegas is set to take place this Friday starting at 10 a.m., according to the Richmond Police Department.

The service, which is open to the public, will be held at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium at 403 Civic Center Plaza, police said. Parking will be limited, so folks are asked to arrive early.

A burial and reception takes place after the service but is only for family, friends and law enforcement personnel.

vegas.2-12Vegas was a 15-year veteran of the department who was killed while off-duty in a domestic violence inside his Vallejo home on Feb. 11.

He was described as a family man who was a perpetually pleasant presence in the police department. Vegas was a fun-loving cop who was always in a good mood, according to his colleagues, and he touched the lives of many in Richmond and Vallejo, including through the foster program he ran from his home with his wife.

“Thank you for supporting the Vegas family during their most difficult time,” Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan said.
