The man wanted in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Richmond that killed 77-year-old Walnut Creek resident Anthony Tonti last week was arrested on Monday and charged with two felonies Wednesday, police said.

With help from the public, police caught up to 32-year-old Obed Obeso of Richmond (pictured) on San Pablo Avenue near the Richmond Annex neighborhood about 7:35 a.m. Monday, Richmond police Lt. Andre Hill said. Right before his arrest, Obeso was riding in a vehicle as a passenger, Hill said. No further details about his arrest were immediately released.

On Wednesday, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office formally charged Obeso with vehicular manslaughter and hit and run. He is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility on $150,000 bail, Hill said.

Richmond police announce arrest in fatal hit-and-run at Ventura and SolanoAuthorities believe Obeso was behind the wheel of Ford Ranger that was speeding and failed to stop for a stop sign on Ventura Street at Solano Avenue just past midnight early Friday.

His car collided with the 2011 Ford Fusion driven by Tonti. Officers arrived at the scene to find Tonti unresponsive. They also learned the driver of the Ford Ranger had fled the scene on foot on westbound Solano Avenue toward San Pablo Avenue.

Tonti was pronounced dead a short time after the collision, Hill said.
