Man hiding from deputies locks self in airtight gun safe for more than an hour

23rd Street fight turns fatal

A man locked himself in an airtight, standing gun safe while hiding from Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies earlier this month, the department said Friday.

Deputies went to the man’s home on a report that he brandished a weapon and made threats in unincorporated San Pablo, according to the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff.

They didn’t find him in the home, but they did hear “banging and cries for help coming from the garage.”

It was the suspect, who had hidden himself in the gun case and “could not free himself,” the sheriff’s office said.

The man gave the combination to unlock the safe to the deputies, who freed him.

“He had been in it for over an hour,” officials said.

He was booked into County Jail.

Further information about the case wasn’t immediately available.
