Richmond poets encouraged to submit works for city-sponsored collection

Richmond’s poets are encouraged to submit their works for possible inclusion in a city-sponsored poetry collection that will be published in August, according to the nonprofit For Richmond, which spoke with the organizer.

The first-ever Richmond Anthology of Poetry (RAP) project, fueled by a $1,500 mini grant from the City of Richmond’s Arts & Culture Commission, was organized by Richmond resident Daniel Ari.

To be considered for inclusion, the writers must live or work in Richmond or have ties to the city, according to the For Richmond report. Writers from all neighborhoods and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as this project seeks to represent Richmond’s diversity.

“You don’t have to be a poet to submit poetry,” Ari said, adding that “some of the best poetry comes from people who don’t identify as poets, per se.”

One to four poems – up to 50 lines each – can be submitted by April 30, 2016. All styles are welcome, and writing about Richmond life is welcome but not mandatory. Poems written in languages other than English can be submitted, but Ari asks that a version with English translation be provided as well.

Selections for the RAP edition will be announced in July 2016 and cash prizes (TBD) will be awarded to outstanding poems.

Ari holds a MFA Degree in Poetry from Arizona State University. He hosts a Writing Jam at his Richmond home on the last Sunday every month. Contact him at the email listed below for more information on the Writing Jam.

“I’m hoping that this will be one more way of just showing the rest of the Bay Area and the rest of California who we are and that we’re producing a lot of great work and creativity here,” he told For Richmond

To submit poems for consideration for the RAP, submit them by April 30, 2016, online, email them to or mail them to: Richmond Anthology of Poetry, c/o City of Richmond, Attn: Michele Seville, P.O. Box 4046, Richmond, CA, 94804.
